Principal's Message

Greetings Normandy School Community!

The first quarter and our Halloween festivities have officially concluded, and the year ahead is filled with even more excitement.  Thank you Normandy Families for all that you do for your children as partners in education.

I am very proud of our Normandy teachers and staff for all that they do to consistently prepare engaging and challenging learning opportunities for our students.  In addition to core learning in classrooms, we use other programs to support high levels of progress.  These programs include Accelerated Reader, Reading Eggs and JiJi Math.  These programs have built in incentives and celebrations to keep motivation high and to highlight the progress and hard work of students.  JiJi and Reading Eggs can be accessed at home through our Normandy Library website - https://normandylibrary.weebly.com/

  • Accelerated Reader (AR) - As students read books, or have books read to them, the student can take an AR quiz to test their comprehension of the book.  If a student passes the quiz, they then get credit for the number of words in that book.  We then have a bulletin board where students can have their picture posted when they achieve 50,000 words.  (AR is accessed in school ONLY.  No home access.)
  • Celebration - Every Wednesday at Normandy is “Words Wednesday”.  On morning announcements we celebrate individual student reading accomplishments, as well as announce our school wide word count update. Most recently, we passed the 10 Million Word mark as a school!!!
  • Reading Eggs - As students progress through Reading Eggs and practice their phonics skills, they will complete various “maps” (12 Maps in total).  By working on Reading Eggs at school and at home, students will reinforce the learning they receive each day during our Fundations phonics classroom instruction.  Especially for students who are struggling with their phonics and decoding skills, we have seen tremendous progress when they spend just 10 minutes each day on Reading Eggs.  (Both home & school access is allowed)
  • Celebration - As students finish a map, I visit their classrooms once per week to distribute these “Reading Eggs Certificates” for finishing a map.
  • JiJi Math - Who is JiJi?  Perhaps you’ve heard about this famous penguin!  This program challenges students to solve math puzzles as it supports the math skills they learn each day in the classroom.  We have already doubled our usage this year (Compared to last year) due to the excitement and building wide emphasis.  (Both home and school access is allowed)
  • Celebration - As classrooms progress through JiJi’s puzzles, they are each given a weekly “% complete” update.  As the class averages 10%, 25% and 50% completion, I visit the classroom to acknowledge & celebrate their work.
  • 10% complete - JiJi “trophy” for the class
  • 25% complete - Special Animal eraser for every student in the class
  • 50% complete - Class Photo Opp (in March) with JiJi

 Normandy Library Mural & Transformation

We are excited to welcome back our Normandy friend and artist, Beth Sage. After Thanksgiving, Ms. Sage will begin to transform the walls of our Normandy Library!  She is the artist who painted the murals in our main hallway, cafeteria and Hive.  Our Normandy Library walls will be transformed into an outdoor scene!  We are excited to have our students enter the library and “Take a Walk in the Park” as they further develop a love for reading!  (This transformative project is fully funded by the Bay Village Education Foundation!!!  Thank you BVEF!)

The Normandy PTA continues to do wonderful things for your children!  Hopefully, you will be able to join us for the next meeting on Tuesday, November 13 at 9:30am at Normandy.

Be sure to stay connected with Normandy on Social Media and online:

It is our hope to further enrich the learning of every Normandy student and to maximize each child’s academic growth.  As we accelerate into November, I am thrilled to be able to partner with each family and teacher to ensure great learning experiences for every child!

 Sincerely,

Dan Sebring, Principal
